Former Calape mayor Ernest Herrera, who is running for Cebu City councilor next year, wants the city’s persons with disability (PWD) to also get the same benefits with the senior citizens. “If we are given a chance to serve, we will level up the benefits of the PWDs, the same benefits enjoyed by the senior citizens. That’s just the start,” Herrera told Newsph.Org. Herrera, who is with Barug Partido Demoktratiko-Pilipino – Laban ng Bayan (Barug PDP-Laban), said that while the senior citizens are given P12,000 per year, the PWDs are only getting P7,000. He said he does not see why the PWDs cannot enjoy similar benefits the elderly are getting – the same with what is provided in the national law. He said whether or not he wins, he will see to it his partymates will push for this in the City Council right at the start of the 2019-20222 term. Also, Herrera said there are national laws that provide for the priority lanes, PWD/elderly ramps, and others for both the senior citizens and the PWDs, yet these are not implemented in PUJ terminals and in most private establishments. He said he will have that imposed if he gets the Cebu City people’s mandate. “Daghan pang wa magtuman anang priority lanes, then ang pagsakay sa PUJ, taxi or buses, there are already seats for PWD pero wa gisunod. Nganung wa man? These are just a few things I want to see and look into. And the parking spaces, wa gihapon hatagi og priority ang mga PWD ug mga senior, daghang violation that we need to look into,” he said, He said he is “happy” that SM Seaside is providing the motorized carts for the PWDs and the senior citizens, however the use is “not regulated.” “Everybody can use it, apil ang mga bata. I have seen it. Bisag mga bata makagamit. We have to regulate this,” he said. Herrera said the PWDs are special to him as his father, the late Senator Ernest Herrera was a polio victim. Herrera was mayor in Calape from 2001 to 2007 before he started working at the office of Senator Miguel Zubiri. A native of Cebu City, after his stint as Calape mayor he settled in Cebu City to manage the family business. |LGC
