Rights lawyer gunned down in Negros

(Ben Ramos)

Human rights lawyer Ben Ramos was shot dead Tuesday night while on his way home after filing a motion for a political prisoner in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental. Ramos is one of the lawyers for UP Cebu alumna and political prisoner Myles Albasin and the rest of the Mabinay 6. Ramos, secretary-general of the National Union of Peoples' Lawyers (NUPL)-Negros Island, was standing in front of a store at past 10Pm Monday when a riding-in-tandem rained bullets on him. He succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. The suspect fled in a motorcycle. Aside from handling cases of political prisoners such as the Mabinay 6, Ramos also assisted in the case of the victims of the Sagay 9 massacre. He was also among the lawyers who were red-tagged as members of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) in a flyer circulated last April 2018 in Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental by suspected state forces. - LGC
